Poppies on Picacho
Springtime, when the Mexican Poppies bloom at the base of Picacho Peak, was the inspiration for this piece.
Size: 35” wide by 31 1/2” length
Hanging: 3-inch sleeve with corner protesters on the top back of the piece. A wood slat or dowel may be used or a decorative rod. (Not included)
Strips of rust dyed muslin form the sky in this piece. See Process tab for more info. I liked the color for the sky because Picacho has aged into a rich rusty brown color. The base of the Peak gradually slopes away, however large rocks and boulders that have broken off from the Peak litter the base. The slope gives way to the finer material of sand and pebbles. This is where the Poppies bloom in the spring, and the slope is covered in a blanket of orange.
Picacho Peak is also home to the Mighty Saguaro. In my piece, the Saguaro are getting ready to bloom. I use batik commercial fabrics to depict the scene on a background of tinted Osnaburg, a coarsely woven cotton. You will also see a variety of machine and hand stitching.
